Family History
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.46 $From the author of the best-selling memoir Slow Motion (“Chilling . . . her vision is unblinking”—New York Times Book Review; “Riveting . . . a breathtaking combination of candor and bravado”—San Francisco Chronicle), a ferociously paced new novel about a woman losing control of her life, her marriage, and her kids, and discovering that you can do everything right and still find the world you’ve made slipping away.Rachel Jensen has it all: a husband she adores, challenging work in art restoration, a terrific teenage daughter, and a new baby on the way. Then her infant son is injured in an accident in her daughter’s arms, and that accident begets a terrifying lie. Set in a small Massachusetts town, Family History is about a family spiraling toward disintegration, the terrible force of guilt in children, and a mother’s nightmarish realization that she cannot protect her own child. As the life the Jensens have so carefully built begins its slow collapse, we see with excruciating clarity the frailty of our strongest allegiances and the precarious ledge upon which our most vital relations—marriage, parenthood—are balanced. Family History blazes through this intimate and highly charged territory with stunning velocity, and marks a bold new step forward for the prodigiously gifted Dani Shapiro.

Family History in the Middle East: Household, Property, and Gender
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 4.16 $Challenges conventional assumptions about the family and the modern Middle East.Despite the constant refrain that family is the most important social institution in Middle Eastern societies, only recently has it become the focus for rethinking the modern history of the Middle East. This book introduces exciting new findings by historians, anthropologists, and historical demographers that challenge pervasive assumptions about family made in the past. Using specific case studies based on original archival research and fieldwork, the contributors focus on the interplay between micro and macro processes of change and bridge the gap between materialist and discursive frameworks of analysis. They reveal the flexibility and dynamism of family life and show the complex juxtaposition of different rhythms of time (individual time, family time, historical time). These findings interface directly with and demonstrate the need for a critical reassessment of current debates on gender, modernity, and Islam.

A Family History Comprising the Surnames of Gade, Gadie, Gaudie, Gawdie, Gawdy,
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.29 $Excerpt from A Family History, Vol. 2: Comprising the Surnames of Gade-Gadie-Gaudie-Gawdie-Gawdy-Gowdy-Goudey-Gowdey-Gauden-Gaudern-and the Variant Forms, From A. D. 800 to A. D. 1919While passing over the splendidly graded Broad Brook Road, between the villages of Somers and Broad Brook, the stately residence of the late Theodore Gowdy was seen; then, following the same course. The residence of the late Tudor Gowdy was passed and after that the residence where the late Myron F. Gowdy and three generations of the family had lived. Here a longer stop was made. For here had been situated an older residence of the family. Upon this extensive farm only a few rods from the present mansion stood the old-fashioned homestead owned and occupied by the grandparents of the author. This old house and low connecting buildings, long ago dismantled, were constructed upon the peculiar plan seen only in the New England states. The main part of the residence was large on its foundation with low posts and broad gables. The central chimney stack was very large, comprising several Hues. The windows were small and lighted with eight-by-ten glass. There was a long, low woodshed connected with the house extending nearly to the barn. Across the road and nearly in front of this venerable homestead there is an enormous white oak tree that has stood a sentinel and landmark in the neighborhood for more than two centuries, the chronology of its years securely preserved within its trunk. The branches of this remarkable tree stretch away at right angles with its enormous body more than a hundred feet, and the circumference of the trunk at the base is 17 feet, 4 inches, 3 feet, 6 inches above the ground. While we are considering trees it seems pertinent to mention the fact that this section of the state is notable for the great number of such oaks that were the kings of trees a hundred years ago and now lift their heads above the cleared fields and diffuse their gracious shade far and wi...

A Family History of Illness: Memory as Medicine (McLellan Endowed Series xx)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.45 $While in the ICU with a near-fatal case of pneumonia, Brett Walker was asked, "Do you have a family history of illness?"―a standard and deceptively simple question that for Walker, a professional historian, took on additional meaning and spurred him to investigate his family's medical past. In this deeply personal narrative, he constructs a history of his body to understand his diagnosis with a serious immunological disorder, weaving together his dying grandfather's sneaking a cigarette in a shed on the family's Montana farm, blood fractionation experiments in Europe during World War II, and nineteenth-century cholera outbreaks that ravaged small American towns as his ancestors were making their way west.A Family History of Illness is a gritty historical memoir that examines the body's immune system and microbial composition as well as the biological and cultural origins of memory and history, offering a startling, fresh way to view the role of history in understanding our physical selves. In his own search, Walker soon realizes that this broader scope is more valuable than a strictly medical family history. He finds that family legacies shape us both physically and symbolically, forming the root of our identity and values, and he urges us to renew our interest in the past or risk misunderstanding ourselves and the world around us.

Barksdale Family History and Genealogy: With Collateral Lines (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.76 $Excerpt from Barksdale Family History and Genealogy: With Collateral Lines Six years ago, while visiting my brother, I came across an old copy Of the pamphlet on the Barksdale Family by Miss Hubert. With the idea of revising and bringing down to date my own line, principally for the benefit of my three young nieces, I began the necessary re? Search. My investigations soon became so involved with other lines that it was necessary to extend the scope of the work originally planned, and several members of the family prevailed upon me to endeavor to compile the complete history and genealogy of the entire family. The compilation Of a complete genealogy of a family of ten, or more, generations, including therein all of the female lines, is almost a lifetime work for a single individual and would require many volumes to encompass it. The within work is by no means a complete genealogy in this sense, nor is it claimed to be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Global Families: A History of Asian International Adoption in America (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.68 $In the last fifty years, transnational adoption—specifically, the adoption of Asian children—has exploded in popularity as an alternative path to family making. Despite the cultural acceptance of this practice, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the factors that allowed Asian international adoption to flourish. In Global Families, Catherine Ceniza Choy unearths the little-known historical origins of Asian international adoption in the United States. Beginning with the post-World War II presence of the U.S. military in Asia, she reveals how mixed-race children born of Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese women and U.S. servicemen comprised one of the earliest groups of adoptive children. Based on extensive archival research, Global Families moves beyond one-dimensional portrayals of Asian international adoption as either a progressive form of U.S. multiculturalism or as an exploitative form of cultural and economic imperialism. Rather, Choy acknowledges the complexity of the phenomenon, illuminating both its radical possibilities of a world united across national, cultural, and racial divides through family formation and its strong potential for reinforcing the very racial and cultural hierarchies it sought to challenge.

Local and Family History in South Carolina: A Bibliography.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.00 $This is the first place a researcher interested in South Carolina should cheek. It lists an enormous number of sources of printed (and some manuscript) information which are useful for studying S.C. families, churches, and local history. Eighty-three libraries throughout the state have provided lists of their books and pamphlets on local, church, and family history. The result is a bibliography which contains nearly eight times the number of sources as Dr. J. Harold Easterby's standard Guide to the Study and Reading of South Carolina History. This bibliography contains more than 8,000 entries, and goes far beyond any previous work. The family, church, as local historian who does not consult this book is likely to duplicate research already done and published, as well as overlook many publications that would aid him in his work. Cote drew heavily on the collections of South Carolina Historical Society, the South Carolinian Library at the Univ. of S.C., and on numerous county, college, university, historical society and research libraries for his material. Some 1,900 sources for the study of towns, counties, and institutions are provided; an equal number of published genealogies, and an equal number of sources for S.C. church history records, along with thousands of sources on other subjects relating to the state. Locations of Scarce items are cited.
